How to configure my dedicated server for a (already) successful site?
I have finally moved to a dedicated server after years of shared hosting. I have a successful site that occasionally has a huge surge of hits, as many as 50,000 in a day. Should I consider limiting available connections, to avoid processor overload? I’d rather have some of the readers try again than damage the hardware or lock it up because there are no limits set on a busy day.
I should add that the 50,000-75,000 hits, when they come, tend to come in a burst of a few hours, rather than distributed evenly over the whole day. The site, incidentally, runs on CentOS5 on a Xeon DS300, 2gb RAM 500gb SATA – just can’t afford the raid redundancy on the more expensive dedicated packages right now (even if people say you can’t afford NOT to, etc, I just don’t have the resource at present, and have to rely on backups).

This depends on what server you have (i.e Windows or Linux).
Any additional surely can help any of us with your concerns.

Hi
AJ it sounds like it time to spend some money to me, if you are doing business from this system.
its time to uprate the lot as it will pay for itself in time but your current system is failing you and your customers.
Its not just the server its the connection also the server needs to be raided and a spare drive kept for when it fails and not if it fails. As it will fail When?? how long is a piece of string.
If you are selling anything you could be loosing revenue and customer goodwill with the current setup

I wouldn’t bother. 50,000 hits a day is under one a second. A dedicated host will not have any difficulty at all with traffic many times that even with e.g. a heavyweight database back end. It is still fairly simple in terms of its computing requirements.
